Epson & Nisus Writer

This is the current information on the Epson printer:

The ONLY problem that gives your symptoms, which we know about, is the conflict with, what is now, an older version of the Epson 800, 740 and perhaps some other printer driver (still being shipped with the printer). The latest version, obtainable from their web site, does not have that problem.

A slight correction is needed to keep things straight. THE DRIVER FOR THE EPSON COLOR STYLUS 800 PRINTER AVAILABLE FROM THE EPSON USA WEB SITE is STILL the one which CRASHES NISUS WRITER, NETSCAPE and REUNION. EPSON USA HAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS PROBLEM SINCE NOVEMBER, 1997. The driver for the CS 800 available from the Epson Germany's site fixes the bug. Drivers listed with suffixes of e or f are in English or French, respectively; drivers with no suffix are in German. The ftp site to obtain the non-buggy driver is here.

MANY EPSON USERS HAVE USED THE DRIVER FROM THE GERMAN SITE WITH NO SERIOUS PROBLEMS. The sole problem in using the German driver is that the paper size defaults to A4. The default paper size is adjustable by the user in well-written printer drivers, but not in the Epson driver. A procedure using ResEdit to modify the default page setup to Letter was recently posted on the Epson mailing list.
