Moving Classic NW Documents to OS X

Post by martin »

Moving Classic Nisus Writer documents from an OS 9 machine to an OS X machine results in the file showing up as a Unix Executable File on Mac OS X.

This happens because Classic Nisus Writer files have resource forks that store your formatting information. OS X does support this, but PC formatted drives, such as USB keydrives, iPods, and other such drives do not support this.

If you need to move these files via a PC formatted drive, you can reformat the drive using Disk Utility, which comes with the operating system. However, that may not be possible for you to do for whatever reason. In that case, just put these files in a folder and archive them using DropStuff from SmithMicro to compress these files. Then you can put them on your PC formatted USB drive and unstuff them once they are moved to the new location.
