"most people don’t want to do page layout on a 10.5" screen". Say wot? 29 years ago (good grief!!!) we fought and scrambled to do it on a b&w 9" screen and thought we were plumbed directly into The Force. LOL

Cheers, geoff

I was quite content with my 5inch screen :

Admitted, I used this in 1996, but at least it was portable :D

Despite a couple too many taps, what's so bad in using Pages with Dropbox? It seems to work quite fine here. Sure, you don't get direct, elegant syncing as if you were using Pages on both the Mac and iPad, but it's no different than going to a file system interface (the Finder, or Dropbox) and opening a file.

My guess is that we should consider anything on the iPad a simplified version. The iPad is meant to be simple. The only "complete" writing tool we have on a tablet is Ms Office, and we see how it is doing. I don't expect to see a full version of Nisus Writer Pro on the iPad as well. As a consequence, I guess it is time to keep things simple, again.

Paolo,

I get simple. I don't get stripping away formatting that Pages iOS can't recognize and changing the document. Simple doesn't necessitate destructive formatting (as Docs2Go shows). For those who create simple documents and finish those documents the first time around, this might not be a problem. But I'm constantly working on a document. I would like to know that I could open it in Pages on iOS and it looks the same in Pages on Mac or vice versa, no matter what features are supported on either. I don't want to constantly be working on a copy of my document. It's unnecessary, given modern programming abilities.

Oh, speaking of simple...

Here's the WHOLE process with working with Dropbox:

Open Document with Another App in Dropbox
Opens in Pages
Do your work
Click Tool
Open in Another App
Choose to save in Pages format
Choose Dropbox
Choose to Upload to Dropbox

Yep...........that's simple alright. :)

And the success or failure of the Surface is not really an indication of the success or failure of Microsoft Office on the tablet platform, and should not be conflated. Having a full Office is one of the only redeeming parts of the Surface. And we all know that if Microsoft released a full version for the iPad, it would be big (understatement). And it would solve a lot of our headaches (although it would probably bring on others).

I have given up on Nisus for iPad, and have been working with an interesting application, iA Writer http://www.iawriter.com/mac/ which is completely cross-country, so to speak, Mac, iPad, iPhone, syncs through iCloud or Dropbox. It works with Markdown, and there seems to be a macro in Nisus which translates the markdown into formatting. I haven't needed it yet, so I haven't tried.
If you see the virtual keyboard, you'll realise how particularly intersting it is.
I have been using it quite a lot, and I must say I am satisfied.
There is another such application, with lots of formatting, Nebulous Notes http://nebulousapps.net, which can also be synchronized easily.
I haven't tried UX-Write yet, but one advantage the others have is the price:
- iA Writer costs 4.99$ for the mac, plus 99 cents for the iPad and Phone combined;
- Nebulous notes has a light version free, and a complete version for 4.99
- UX-Write costs $24.99, there is more direct formatting than in iA Writer, but not so much more than in Nebulous.
Of course I should change all that to Nisus in a heartbeat, but as I said, I have lost hope. I'll try to get over it with the (cheaper) replacements.

Here is something I found in my round-trip from Nisus Mac to Pages iPad, and back.

- DOC files exported from Nisus are opened (from Dropbox) with no apparent problems from Pages iPad. The files is converted and copied as a duplicated in the internal storage of Pages.

- Paragraph styles (correctly exported by Nisus) are removed and converted to plain formatting in Pages. Only a set of default paragraph styles are allowed by Pages iPad, and the ones found in a DOC file are not converted.

- When going back to Nisus, Pages' paragraph styles are preserved. The older styles created in Nisus are no longer applied, and it seems they have been removed.

- Footnote styles are modifed, and Nisus uses the format imposed by Pages.

I've yet to try annotations and highlights. The mess with the styles is a problem for me, even if it could be less severe if I had to exchange my documents less frequently (but this would prevent the scope of the iPad as a 'mission on the field' device).

there's a new iPad Editor with very very powerful features (very nice Text-Snippets function, Macro-System etc). It's plain text and Markdown like a lot of others, but it might be the most powerful.
(Not affiliated with the publisher, but I may have to get an iPad becaus of this;-))

O no, not another text editor from which to choose when using the iPad! Not one so good as this one looks!

(I just purchased it; I suspect it could replace WriteRoom as my new favourite - markdown preview is a dream!)

I'm currently using Textilus on the iPad. It both reads and writes rtf! Has iCloud and Dropbox syncing and it's the most complete wordprocessor I've yet seen on the iPad. No footnotes or multi-columns alas, but basic stylesheets, fonts and several other real wordprocessory things (e.g. indents) those Markdown and HTML/plain text iOS editors lack. Good God, it even has a tab key on its onscreen keyboard!

It syncs well with Scrivener on the Mac using Scrivener's external folder sync feature, but not as well with NWP unfortunately (I've not spent as much time with it and NWP as with Scrivener but it seems to lose/change styles, line spacing, font settings, etc. when transferring documents back and forth between Nisus and Textilus, whereas the Scrivener transfers work very well).

Textilus's Dropbox integration is odd to say the least, way more complicated and confusing than any other iOS Dropbox-compatible editor I've used, but once you get the hang of it it works well. I've not tried it with iCloud so I don't know how well it works with that.

Nisus could buy Textilus and use it as the basis for an iOS version of Nisus Writer. It might well offer a faster way into the iOS market than writing their own iOS Writer from scratch, particularly with the upcoming text handling improvements in iOS 7, enhancements that should enable Textilus to really sing. I'm concerned that Nisus has left it so late to enter the iOS market and if they don't do something with iOS soon they're in trouble. Mac sales are falling (not as fast as PC sales but the trend is obvious) and future growth is clearly with iOS rather than with legacy systems like OS X and Windows.

There is something in Textilus that I never liked. Contrary to most text editors on the iPad, I find it too busy and not intuitive. In other words, I could never find it intuitive and let me focus on my writing. However, I can give it another chance.

These days I've been ill, and have tried to continue working in my living room, much warmer and comfortable than my home office. It was the ideal situation to focus on some text-only works that attended completion.

My texts are mostly written in Nisus Writer or Scrivener. Often, I collect snippets, that then are assembled in a Nisus or Scrivener document/porject. This time, I had to write right in a long document with a complex layout, and using the usual practice of working on snippets did not work. I needed control on the final shape of the document.

I sincerely felt the need for Nisus for iPad. I've been recently doing some tests with Pages 5, and it was really nice to work on a complex, formatted text that appeared in the same way both on the Mac and the iPad. This does not seem possible with Nisus. And Pages is not, and will probably never be, a replacement for Nisus.

So, I have to admit that Nisus for iOS would be great for me. The more the iPad becomes an essential tool for my work, the more Nisus is missing.

I spilled coffee on my beautiful Air. It was so nice. 8GB. Expensive. I'm now using my old MacBook (1st gen aluminium), but I can barely work with it. I'd love to have Nisus for iPad, it would actually make me buy one.

Cheers.

I just looked up Editorial for iPad, full of hope… and it certainly makes markdown easy. But for the French-writer it has a powerful drawback if one thinks of iWriter: using the accents has not been made easy. I found this a bit puzzling because I got the impression this text editor was coming from Germany (the Internet address says .de), and German uses accents too.
I have been using iWriter because you don't have to interrupt the writing flow to look for accented vowels, you can use it on your Mac, your iPad and your iPhone too, it syncs through iCloud or Dropbox in real time, and all these reasons make writing when on the road easier. I generally leave markdown be (even though it's easy enough to use in iWriter), and adjust that on the Mac when I am home again.
All this to say that I find Editorial awesome, but not for my needs.
I still miss Nisus for iPad (did you hear that, Martin & Co?)

:? I can't understand why Nisus has not produced a version for IPad! The demand has been high for years.
