NWP3 Default Internet Link

Post by hatchmo »

It's helpful that NWP3 fills in http:// when we Add Link to URL…
However, since browsers no longer display http sites, it would save time and work if it instead filled in https://
Don't you think it's time?
Thanks.

G’day, Richard et al

> “… browsers no longer display http sites”

I’m afraid this is not true. Browsers may or may not show the protocol prefix in the URL once a page has been downloaded, but they usually respect what you supply as the protocol in the URL field when they attempt to fetch the page in the first place. If a Web page resides on a server that does not offer secure transmission (as many still do), using the “https://” protocol prefix will usually result in failure of the page to download, accompanied by an error message to the effect that the browser could not establish a secure connection to the server.

As more and more Websites become situated on servers offering the HTTPS protocol, it might perhaps be more convenient if the Add Link to URL… command now inserted the “https://” prefix by default. However, in light of the foregoing, prudence suggests checking the function of any inserted hyperlink before publication. Whichever prefix one uses as the default, one cannot assume that it will work properly in all cases.

Using http instead of https is still viable in web browsers. However, the suggestion to default Nisus Writer to showing https would be more modern. It likely doesn't matter much, as I expect most users will paste a previously copied link instead of typing one manually. The default display of http or https merely helps users understand a URL is expected.
