What languages can Nisus Writer hyphenate?

Post by martin »

Nisus Writer provides automatic hyphenation for the following languages:

Bengali
Croatian
Danish
Dutch
English
Estonian
French
German
Greek
Gujarati
Hindi
Icelandic
Italian
Kannada
Kurdish
Malayalam
Marathi
Panjabi
Polish
Portugeuese
Romanian
Russian
Serbian
Slovenian
Spanish
Tamil
Telugu

If you mark your text as being in one of these languages, and have hyphenation enabled (via the menu View > Hyphenation), that text will be hyphenated automatically.

Installing Additional Hyphenation Dictionaries:
If your language is not listed above, you may still be able to install an automatic hyphenation dictionary for your language. When Nisus Writer launches, it looks for any TeX hyphenation pattern files in its hyphenation dictionary folder:
  • In Nisus Writer Pro version 2.0.7 and earlier (before sandboxing) this folder is located at:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Nisus Writer Pro/Languages/Hyphenation/
  • In Nisus Writer Pro version 2.1 and later (sandboxed) this folder is located at:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.nisus.NisusWriter/Data/Library/Application Support/Nisus Writer Pro/Languages/Hyphenation
These dictionary files should be named using the language's ISO code and a "dic" file extension, eg: "fr.dic" for French, "de_AT.dic" for Austrian German, "en.dic" for English, "en_GB.dic" for British English, etc.

You may find some TeX hyphenation dictionaries freely available on the web; LibreOffice makes several of them available for download. If you download a ".oxt" file, you will want to change the file extension to ".zip", expand the archive, and look inside for a ".dic" hyphenation dictionary.

Manual Hyphenation:
In additional to automatic hyphenation, you can also insert a "soft hyphen" (aka: discretionary hyphen) into your text. Those hyphens are only shown exactly where they've been inserted, and only if a line wrap is required for that word. You may insert a soft hyphen by using the menu Insert > Special Character > Dashes and Hyphens > Soft Hyphen.
