Plans regarding OpenDocument format?

Post by Oronet_Commander »

Dear all:

Is there any plan/opinion at Nisus regarding OpenDocument format support in Writer Express?

Thanks!

Do you mean OASIS (as in, the XML-based open file format used by OpenOffice and accessible by other WPs such as AbiWord, WordPerfect, and so on)?

If so, I'd think that (a) supporting it would be a plus, and (b) not too difficult (as OASIS/RTF import/export is already available in various open source packages and the format is published).

I think any program written for a Mac must use as many industry standards as possibl. OO .xml would be appreciated as would better .rtf (although .rtf is already pretty good).

What are the advantages of this format? Does it provide any particular benefits?

Second, are there any programs that use this format but don't support RTF?

As stross mentioned, it may not be too difficult to add support for this format, and so it could be any easy and simple addition. However, if the benefits are negligible, I, for one, would rather the Nisus engineers spend time developing things such as footnotes, indexing tools, etc. (see plenty of the topics here for some other ideas).

Just my 1/50th of a dollar, so please feel free to disagree.

OpenDoc
Boy, my face is red!

I somehow forgot the whole OpenDoc thing. For some reason the full name "OpenDocument" didn't bring it back for me.

Fortunately, I think my other question still goes: is it worth it? With LinkBack just developed, it seems unlikely that Nisus would engineer this addition, although that's not based on anything but what I would imagine them to do.

OpenDoc has nothing to do with OpenDocument, which is the new name for the OASIS xml format specification, used by OpenOffice.org 2.0, Abiword, Kword, and supported by the EU as a possible candidate for the transmission of public documents in a non-propietary format, as you can see in the following link http://europa.eu.int/idabc/en/document/3439
