non-breaking hyphen
non-breaking hyphen
How does one use this feature? (I assume it's available?) If I want "gold-en" not to break across a line, but to appear on one line, how is it done?
There might be a better way to do this, but here's one way.
1. Open the system's Character Palette (Edit > Special Characters; or click the language/flag menu extra if it's visible toward the right of the menu bar, then Show Character Palette).
2. In the search field at the bottom, enter 2011.
3. Double-click "- Unicode" if you are given a choice.
4. Click the Insert button.
If you use this frequently, you might add it to your Character Palette Favorites.

I'll try it...
but it seems awkward, especially compared to the feature on other word processors.
OK, how do I add non-breaking hyphen to favorites?
or anything to Character Palette Favorites,
for that matter?
Thanks.
for that matter?
Thanks.
To add a character to Favorites in the Tiger Character Palette (other OS versions might be slightly different)...
1. Select the character.
2. Click the gear at the lower left of the palette.
3. Click "Add to Favorites" from the menu.
You might consider setting something up with QuickFix. If there are a limited number of words involving non-breaking hyphens, you could, for instance, have "gold-en" (as typed) convert to "gold-en" (with a non-breaking hyphen). Or you could have "-nb" convert to a non-breaking hyphen. In the latter case you would have to delete the spaces before and after.

You could also load a macro that inserts a non-breaking hyphen and then assign it a keyboard shortcut.
But wouldn't that be an obvious and more elegant solution?martin wrote:You could also load a macro that inserts a non-breaking hyphen and then assign it a keyboard shortcut.

That's totally not enough steps.martin wrote:You could also load a macro that inserts a non-breaking hyphen and then assign it a keyboard shortcut.
