Thesaurus doesn't appear in Snow Leopard

Post by gardenjim »

The Nisus Thesaurus no longer appears in the Services menu now that I've upgraded to Snow Leopard. Anybody know how to get it back?

You can activate Nisus Thesaurus from the Services:Services Preferences menu (which can also be accessed from System Preferences:Keyboard:Keyboard Shortcuts:Services).
In Keyboard Shortcuts:Services pane check:
Look Up Selection
Replace Selection

Did that. Nisus Thesaurus still not available through Services in any program. Downloading new version of Thesaurus that was supposed to fix the problem. Still no go.
What next?

Hi -

"APPLE/<"

does the job for me - with nothing else changed, after installing new "NWP 1.3.1" and new "Thesaurus".

Otherwise go activate Services as you please: "Services / Services Preferences..."

Those keystrokes do nothing but cause the "ding" sound one gets when hitting a wrong key.
There is nothing to activate in Services regarding a thesaurus of any kind. I've tried on both my iMac and MacBook, both with Snow Leopard.
I really like Snow Leopard overall, but I guess I'll just ignore Services entirely since it is of virtually no use anymore and I'll definitely stay away from Automator where I tried to add a service using its very confusing and entirely counter-intuitive interface. Several articles I found said Apple doesn't say much about either Services or Automator and I assumed it's because they are embarrassed by both.

Hi again -
I am not used to Nisus Thesaurus - but it seems to work with me.

1) Go "Services / Services Preferences / Keyboard Shortcuts"
2) Select "Services" to the left and make sure "Look up Selection in Thesaurus" is activated in the list to the right.
3) Use Shortcut offered or change it your way
4) Close "Services Preferences"
5) Open your Document in Nisus
6) Make your Selection to look up
7) Enter Shortcut "Apple <" or else
8) "Nisus Thesaurus" shows your Selection

Why not with you?

Elbrecht, I've got the same problem, no Thesaurus option appears in the Services menu. I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.1, NWP 1.3.1, NT 1.0.6 and I did exactly as you specified. "Look up Selection in Thesaurus" is checked in Services Preferences. Other apps services appear under the Services menu when text is selected in a NWP document, but none for NWP. Pressing cmd-< just beeps at me though it is the assigned shortcut for looking up selections in the thesaurus.

I guess that's because AppleKey < requires the shift key to get the < and that's three keys Apple key - shift key and then < and all I get is a "ding." The < symbol appears on the same key as the comma and requires a shift.

Should I go into the Shortcuts pane and change it to another shortcut key?
I really would like to have the Nisus Thesaurus available in other programs but Apple's bad new design for Services does not allow that. In fact Lookup in Thesaurus does not show under the Services menu either - in Nisus nor in any other program.

I can use the Thesaurus palette within Nisus Writer instead but I would like to have the Thesaurus available elsewhere. Apple appears to have decided for me that I should not be able to.

Thanks for your help but it sure isn't working for me on either my MacBook or iMac. And I do have the service checked in the Services pane under Keyboard shortcuts.

That's exactly the problem I am having.
Even worse, the Services offered in the Services menu include many not at all relevant to selecting text. Perhaps 10.6.2 will resolve this?

Yeah ... On my MBP it's ticked but nothing to do with the thesaurus appears in the services menu or on the contextual menu; on my MBA, running identical system 10.6.1, same version of NWP, same version of thesaurus, it works as expected. Both have been rebooted since the various installations, the new version of the thesaurus being the last.

Scratch that. Got it to work, then followed the advice here to be sure to use the new Thesaurus. Now it doesn't work any more, so the search is still on.

Well -

keyboards may make the difference - I have a German keyboard with my old black MacBook. And mostly problems for me have been with German localization - so I was about to switch to U.S. keyboard to check alternatively. BUT before doing so, I tried German keyboard again and WOW: NO WAY - I didn't shut down the machine over night...

1) "APPLE / <" [ is out of service now ]
2) "Services / Building..." [ in other apps as well ]

How is that? - it did work the day before - nothing changed not at all...

Martin help!

# # # EDIT # # #

After Restart:
"Services" are back again and even
"APPLE / <" works again - BUT
ONLY WITH GERMAN KEYBOARD!

So turn German and - in case - just Restart for the Services!
What a service...

Image

Note: Nisus Thesaurus does not show in Services Menu - but works for me.
Sometimes at least - if not - Restart.

BTW: SnowLeopard U.S. version running...

Again - Martin help!

# # # EDIT AGAIN # # #

Just Quitting/Starting NW seems to do the job as well -
so try this first, before Restarting the engine!

Nisus Thesaurus has been updated to 1.0.7:

http://nisus.com/Thesaurus/

Now Services work in all applications which support Services under Snow Leopard.
