Japanese top>bottom, right>left

Post by credneb »

The reason I started using Nisus many years ago was for its Japanese support. Until now, I have never had a need for J other than left>right, top>bottom as in English.

Nisus supports right>left for Hebrew and other languages in horizontal lines from top to bottom.

Is there a way to get Japanese in the traditional format of top>bottom, right>left? i.e, the first character is at the top right corner of the page, each column proceeds from top to bottom vertically, and the text proceeds across the page from right to left? (So the last line/column is at the left end of the document)

I've searched the manual and can find nothing. Hopefully there is a built-in solution instead of a complex macro conversion, which would be inherently fragile.

Thanks.

Hi –

Nisus Writer Pro 3.0 offers: "Vertical text layout orientation in floating text boxes and table cells." See the Manual pp. 232ff…

Thank you. Unfortunately it is not a solution. As the instructions say:

"The vertical text boxes are not a solution for full-page vertical text layout, but rather an extra feature to embellish
your default horizontal text layout."

I needed a full solution for a document written in Japanese, not an embellishment.

Thank you again for the response.

I hate to say it, but Scrivener can do it and export it successfully to either .docx or .rtf both of which open successfully Word. Opening the files in NWP, much as I love it, reverts to right-to-left, top-to-bottom.

I pasted the text in Word, which makes it very simple to format with a couple of clicks. Alas.

Yes, it works in the latest version of pages—and apparently in Keynote and Numbers too. TextEdit too.

Well –

as I am still running SIERRA, and iWORK runs on HIGH SIERRA as well – question is, does Vertical Text run on HIGH SIERRA? MAJOVE is out of reach for my early 2011 MacBook Pro I got two internal SSDs for and still hesitate to go AFS Format somehow. With Vertical Text running I would get HIGH though…

Yes, vertical text works in TextEdit, Numbers and Keynote on my 17" MBP running High Sierra 10.13.6. I don't have pages on this machine, but as it works on those three, and in works in Pages on 10.14, I'm sure it will on 10.13.
