Animated Graphics in Forum Posts

Post by DavidK »

Maybe I am sui generis in this comment, but may I ask that those who post silly animated graphics please refrain unless they add something to the actual post? I am still stuck in the dark ages of dial-up access at home, and I get frustrated that a basically text forum like this should take so long to load.

If it were just once, maybe I could live with it. But every time I go back and read new messages, the same tired old nauseatingly cute graphics have to load over and over again.

Nisus Moderaters -- would you consider make this one of the rules of the forum, and taking it upon yourselves to edit posts and delete irrelevant graphics?

Gemboy,

Although I don't find the graphics particularly annoying, you have to understand where David's coming from. Graphics take up a great amount of bandwidth, and on dial-up this is a valid concern.

I understand completely...I have a DSL that is almost as slow as a dial up.

I also don't like rules of how or how not to post.

I just think they're annoying. In any way, shape, or form.

Until this summer I was still on dial-up, now I have DSL; there is considerable difference in speed/load times between the two. It was frustrating to have to wait only for "incidental" graphics to load. Many times I just moved on to other boards. So I understand the OP's concern.

Sometimes the graphics are actually necessary for the forum discussion. I think of some of them that Don and Marten have posted, particularly. I gladly waited for them to load.

rules or graphics

I ask because there seemed to be a thread where someone had an interest in perhaps a rule that forbid movie stars with bananas

Animated graphics. I've always found them annoying.

And if the forum imposed a rule about has-been celebrities with bananas, I'd certainly change my icon.

Look, I'm generally not in favor of excessive numbers of rules. I didn't make my original post a poll, and the number of responses is small, so I'm not going to presume that the 4-1 sense of sympathy with my suggestion calls for any conclusions.

Those of you who post graphics not related to the Nisus issue about which you are posting . . . perhaps you will self-regulate and voluntarily stop.

Thank you.
