To automate future find/replace activities:

Let's say you want to find all instances of bulleted lists in your document and change the bullets to Nisus Writer's automatic numbers so that when you insert a new number Nisus Writer automatically updates all the following numbers.

  1. Choose Find/Replace from the Tools menu

  2. In the Find & Replace window, choose PowerFind.

  3. Choose ¶ Start from the Position menu.

  4. Choose ( from the Match menu.

  5. Choose Space or Tab from the Special menu.

  6. Choose 0+ from the Repeat # menu

  7. Choose ) Start the Match menu.

  8. Choose ( from the Match menu.

  9. Type a bullet (OPTION-8).

  10. Select the first parenthesized expression: "", press OPTION as you drag and drop a copy of the expression on the other side of the bullet.

  11. Press TAB to put your insertion point in the Replace text box of the Find & Replace window.

  12. Choose (...Found 1) from theMatch menu.

  13. Choose Custom A from theNew Number submenu of the Insert menu.

  14. Choose (...Found 3) from the Match menu.

  15. Test the find/replace expression to make sure it works (click Replace All).

  16. Click Macroize.

  17. A dialog appears that offers a variety of options.

  18. Because we're new to this activity, we want to make a new macro command.

  19. Click New Macro Command.

  20. As you click New Macro Command, a new area becomes visible in the dialog which allows you to add this macro command to any preexisting macro file. We'll add it to our Nisus Macros so that it's available whenever we start Nisus Writer.

  21. Type the name of this macro in the text field:
    Bullet to Number

  22. Notice that on the right side of the dialog you can choose from a number of other options. We want to replace all, so we'll leave that button alone. The two check boxes allow you to determine what the macro will do when it finishes its task. At the moment, it's set for Terse (which means: "Don't tell me how many items were replaced" and "If you don't find anything, just stop," and, of course it will, because it has no other commands to execute.)

  23. Click OK.

  24. Take a look at the macro "code". You'll see that the automatic number has changed in the process. Select the character that is supposed to be the automatic number and choose Custom A from the New Number submenu of the Insert menu once again to replace it.

  25. Choose Save from the File menu to save your work.

  26. Nisus Writer has added a new command to your menus: Bullet To Number. Now, whenever you want to change every bullet that appears at the beginning of a paragraph to a number just choose Bullet To Number from the Nisus Macros submenu of the "Gear" menu.
