Nisus Writer Classic is no longer for sale. This page is only for archival purposes.
Nisus Writer treats a different language as though it were a "style." You can apply a language style to a block of text or choose a particular language from the Language sub menu of the Style menu and begin typing in that language. In either case Nisus Writer 5.1.x automatically selects the appropriate hyphenation spelling checker and thesaurus for the designated language.
You must have the appropriate dictionary files from Nisus Software Inc. in order to use these tools.
Nisus Writer 5.1.x comes preset so that your Dictionary Preferences read: "Automatically Switch Dictionaries by Language." Unless you have changed that, the instructions that follow will work for you.
To create a special style that has a particular language as an attribute of it:
- Choose Define Style from the Style menu.
- Choose the language you want from the list. This automatically checks the Languages box.
NOTE: Only those languages above the line in the Language Submenu of the Style Menu represent languages for which Nisus Software supplies a dictionary. You can choose any of the other languages below that line for any purpose (mark text in a particular way as Esperanto or Klingon, for example, for searching or personal notes) but that will have *no effect* on the spelling checker.
- Choose any other attributes you want (to make this a distinguishable style).
- Click SET then DONE.
- Assign a keyboard shortcut to the style.
- Either select a region of text and apply the style, or choose the style and begin to type.
