Nisus Writer offers a variety of tools for selecting text. Most Macintosh users have known many of these for a long time. This tip deals with a unique Nisus Writer capability, Noncontiguous Text Selection--selecting text in several places in the document (noncontiguous selection).
To select text noncontiguously:
- Drag across the text to select it.
- Press OPTION-COMMAND as you select each additional passage. Notice that the I-beam pointer changes to the Noncontiguous Selection I-beam as you press OPTION-COMMAND.
NOTE: When you have a selection (whether simple or noncontiguous), you can select everything not selected in your document (and "un-select" what was selected) by choosing Select Inverse from the Select submenu of the Edit menu.
This (in conjunction with Nisus Writer's Find All feature in the Find/Replace tool) enables you to find everything in your document that is not something. (For example: you can find everything that is not a specific string of text, or any text in a particular font, size, and/or style).
What you can (and cannot) do with noncontiguously selected text:
- Almost anything you can do with contiguously selected text you can do with noncontiguously selected text. Certain commands are disabled for practical (and usually obvious) reasons.
- You can also use noncontiguous selection in the Catalog. You can select a variety of files in a particular folder or folders that are not next to each other and then open them, add them to your search list or copy their names.
