We use abiconvert, which is a tool we developed in cooperation with the AbiWord folks, for one part of the DOC opening process. As for saving rtf as doc, well I have 4 points here: I agree with all your points. RTF IS better and I personally prefer it to DOC. But after reading about it in the list ...

Re: Export to Word and footnotes

Actually, Mellel does export notes to RTF so the export from NWE will be the same IIUC. I read a note by Charles in the Nisus list saying that the DOC export is RTF with .doc name extension, so this is the same thing. While we do support saving notes in RTF in 2.0, do not depend on what Mellel can ...

Re: Export to Word and footnotes

I read that in the future footnotes will be available in Nisus. Will these also export to Word? I have already tried Mellel (which already offers footnotes and endnotes), but that doens't export footnotes to Word docs. Regards, Adelheid Actually, Mellel does export notes to RTF so the export from N...

Re: Cocoa Breakdown

I have a recurring problem that effects NWE and other Cocoa word processing apps. It seems to be based in system resources related to TextEdit. So in NWE, contextual menus no longer function. In other word processing apps applications that are cocoa based, problems are more severe: in TextEdit doub...

Re: Right to Left

As you might remember, Nisus Writer Classic is able to support right to left languages because Apple provided support for those languages in OS 9 and earlier. (Not complete support at first, but it was enough that we were able to do the rest.) When Apple debuted Mac OS X, they took away this functi...

You should differentiate between the capabilities of TextEdit and the Cocoa text engine. TextEdit is a minimal implementation of options available with that engine. NWE, for example, offers options that do not exist in TextEdit and it is still based on the Cocoa text engine. Actually, you would be ...

Proprietary is the opposite of open. This is from Webopedia's dictionary of computer terms but it coincides with every other use of the term I have heard: open architecture: An architecture whose specifications are public. This includes officially approved standards as well as privately designed ar...

RTF might be a format used by Word but it is THE format used by Cocoa. If you want things done the way Cocoa does them and you want your documents to be compatible with other Cocoa applications rtf is a good choice. I don't immediately see how rtf forces you to do anything much more word like than ...

Re: Feature Request: Margin Defaults

I'm delighted with NXE so far, particularly the uncluttered interface. Most important to me, I love the fact that it uses a non-proprietary file format (RTF) as its default. RTF is a propriety format -- it belongs to Microsoft. It is open (i.e., all can see the format) but it still belongs to Micro...

Re: Farsi Support: Panther vs. Jaguar

Could you please check the following in Panther 1- In the TextEdit included with panther under Format-->Text--> there is a new command called "Writing Direction--Right to left (which is absent in Jaguar) Is this feature a system wide service. For example if you check in the Mail app do you see...

The "native format" for NWE is rtf. Assuming the people at Nisus can get rtf to do all the things they want it to do, this is a very good thing. It means that you can share files with your buddies who do not own NWE. It also means that if there is some other word processor that recognizes...

Re: Mellel Supports Arabic/Farsi/Hebrew

I find this interesting because under 10.2, I am able to use Mellel and it seems to be working just fine. Including English text in the same paragraph doesn't seem to work very well but for text in one language, it seems to be working just fine. Has anyone from Nisus contacted Apple regarding this ...

Re: Farsi Support: Panther vs. Jaguar

Greetings, I am very interested in knowing whether Panther provides full support for writing in Farsi? Thanks, Neema The main change planned for Panther that concern you is the addition of the directionality option. This will allow you to "sort of" write from right to left in Farsi. Other...

You have to go by stages here. First become a member of the crowd with the standard features expected in a word processor, than try to stand out.
