Although NWP is my word processor of choice on my Mac, I just found myself using Pages to create a simple business letter because it had several predefined templates. Thanks for the quick help! Although a lot of assertions are still being raised, NWP did not lock up after the import and was able to show the document properly, so all's well!

NWP locked up after abiconvert errors

Opening a Word 2003 document sent by a colleague, NWP locked up requiring a Force Quit. Thanks very much for your response. I figured that TextEdit styles were more sort of macro-like, rather than the NWX model where a change to the style changes the document. Indeed, I don't even see a way to change those styles! For what it's worth, I did notice this over on http://forums.macosxhints...
