Following the New Doc options is a good idea. Maybe a check box in Prefs to choose whether to use the Nisus New Doc defaults, or open as per normal?

I've unchecked the 'show page guide' box in preferences so that new documents created in Nisus Writer Express don't show them, but when I open documents created by other apps (for instance, exports from Scrivener), they still show up. Have you tried using txt files for transferring to FD? In my experience it handles them better than rtfs.
