Re: Access to EndNote from within NWP

I recommend use of Keyboard Maestro for problems like this that require automation of two apps. One could easily implement a keyboard macro to activate Endnote, bringing the reference library window forward so that you can locate the references needed for a given citation instance. Then, a second ma...

Re: Fixed line spacing is hiding in-line equations.

I've observed this issue myself in recent work. In my case, in-line equations from MathType are displayed by NWP with the top edge of the graphics box truncated. By in-line I mean not a displayed equation, on a separate line with a number perhaps, but rather typically a shorter equation that is inse...

Here's a second for the Book feature from FrameMaker. This was one of the strongest features that FrameMaker had. A book document would list the sections or chapters in order and allow the user to open them for editing by double clicking the filename in a list. But the main thing that a book documen...

Several typefaces have non-breaking hyphens; on my system, these include helvetica, geneva, American Typewriter, and Palatino. (But not Times or Times New Roman...). If you display the Mac OS X character palette, you can search for the non-breaking hyphen by typing "non" into the search field at the...

I hate to say this -- but the problem is not simply Apple text system being glacially slow on old machines running Leopard. Because I just tested a big document (65 pages, no tables, bold and italic but all one font) and yes, it was a nightmare -- as in unworkably slow -- in NWP, even with iTunes t...

Well, there's always the hope that the 10.52 update this month will fix things. The story is that the current developer download for the delta update weighs in excess of 400 Mbytes.

As a final comment on the typing lag issue, I guess I'll have to retract my speculation about Time Machine. It is not clear that that alone accounts for the slow typing response on my G4 powerbook. The main thing that is now clear to me is that NWP demands a pretty fast system to get fast typing res...

The Macintosh way is to have a multiple-window interface. Tabs are great for web browsers because you can have lots of sites loading in the background, behind the current tab. A menu command (and a keyboard shortcut assigned to it) to step through a set of document windows would do the job here.

Draft View is slower than Page View

Well, I'm still getting some typing slow downs even with Time Machine off, and I've rebooted again, so I'm not so sure what is going on overall when the typing lags. I have observed, however, that the typing lag is much more noticeable in the Draft view than in the Page view in the same test documen...

As for the Time Machine explanation, would Time Machine still be affecting things if one had never designated a back up or hooked it up to an external drive? No—Leopard normally has Time Machine in the Off setting. If you connect and mount a USB or Firewire hard disk, the Finder will put up a dialo...

Time Machine and Leopard background tasks slow down NWP

I've noticed the typing lag on my G4 Powerbook, so I've spent some time examining what contributes to the lag in NWP under Leopard. While I am sure that complex documents with a large number of imbedded, in-line graphics (such as MathType equations) exhibit a slow typing response, the documents I ha...
