Re: Problems opening files/alternative importer always neede
It's definitely unpredictable. After a long time with no success using this method, I restarted, logged into to another user account, started up NWP, logged back into my usual user account, and everything is working perfectly again.

Re: Problems opening files/alternative importer always neede
The problem opening files is back and won't go away. Most doc or docx files refuse to open except on the retry, where they lose all formatting. The Libre Office thing is back too.

Re: Problems opening files/alternative importer always neede
... it that isn't the most "tortured" work around of the week, I'm not sure what is. Definitely an embarrassingly tortured work around, but guess what? From today, all my files open normally in NWP. I can just click on a doc/docx file and it opens with all the originally formatting, heade...

Re: Problems opening files/alternative importer always neede
Yes, I have no headers either. The way I've found to retain my formatting is to open the document in Pages, export as a Word document, then I can open normally in NWP. I've no idea why documents created by Pages would cause NWP's importers to behave differently but it's working for me.

Re: Problems opening files/alternative importer always neede
The problem has returned to me with a vengeance. This time it affects both .doc and .docx files - previously it was only .doc files - and none of the login/logout moves seem to work this time. The Mac importer opens the files but I lose all the footnotes, which are essential to the work I should be ...

Re: replacing index entries
Thanks. That's perfect. And apologies for the lack of clarity in my explanation. That's what going through a 150,000 document manually indexing names can do to you; you lose the ability to think straight or form an articulate sentence.

Re: replacing index entries
Hi again. I did mark the original text with index entries but none of that seems to have survived. The file has been through all kinds of hoops since then, external reviewers, copy-editors etc. I think they have all been using Word files and so the work I did last year in preparing the manuscript us...

Re: replacing index entries
Was the pdf of the book created in NWP or from a NWP file imported to a page layout app like InDesign? I created the original document in NWP, sent it to the publisher, who in turn sent it to somewhere in India. I now have a pdf file of the book, which seems to have been created by InDesign. The pu...

Re: replacing index entries
Hamid, Thanks as always for your time and effort. Unfortunately, I'm still not getting it. I only have the whole book in pdf format so I have been through that file and made an index which has only family names. I've saved that index in a separate file to send to the publisher. If I try to go throug...

Re: replacing index entries
Thanks Hamid. I really do appreciate your taking the time. I feel like I'm so close yet so far right now. I have a file with surnames only + page numbers. (The output from my original search of the pdf file. Aida, 19 Al-Baharna, 106 I also have the tab-separated file with the search terms (the above...

replacing index entries
Hi I'm hoping there's someone out there who can help save me a lot of time and stress. I originally planned to do the indexing of a book in NWP, using a two-column table. However, the publisher will only supply a pdf file of the final copy so I have created an index by searching through the 200,000-...

Re: Still cannot open .doc files properly
I should have made it clear that it wasn't official advice; it was another user who had experienced the same issue. He said it just came and went without his doing anything. In my case, I am using NWP 2.0.2 on a Macbook Pro (10.6.4). I get this problem with every .doc file. It isn't limited to speci...

Still cannot open .doc files properly
Hi Is there anybody out there with any suggestions as to how I might be able to open .doc files. The advice I received on another thread was to wait it out and the problem may correct itself. I've waited over a month now and still no change. Whenever I try to open a .doc file (.docx is fine), I get ...

Re: Problems opening files/alternative importer always neede
I hope I get lucky too. How long did you have to wait before it corrected itself? I think I have exactly the same issue as you; it was fine and then one day I started getting the message about a problem importing files. If I go to the preferences, look at 'advanced' and then change the importer to '...

Re: Problems opening files/alternative importer always neede
Was a solution found to this issue? I'm at the stage where every Word file now gets the following message:
I can usually open the files but they lose comments etc. Any suggestions? There were problems opening the file "Filename.doc". Retry opening the file with an alternative importer?
