Re: Default file format choice

Use RTF. It's the "default" format. The others have their uses, but they are more specialized. RTFD is the same as RTF but with special handling for lots of images; it really comes into it's own if you have the same image multiple times in your document. Outside of the image use case, it's not got a...

Re: Creating Different Sections or Columns in Headers/Footer

First, you have to click, hold and then drag. But you cannot shrink the footer so small it cuts off the content. There are at least two, possibly three lines of blank text in the footer. The table occupies one of them, but the other line is still there, and still takes up space. This is probably the...

Re: Creating Different Sections or Columns in Headers/Footer

Unfortunately, the column feature is not available for headers and footers. Which is a shame, but there is good news. The way to do what you want is to use a table. In your footer, insert a one row, two or three column table. With it selected, you can turn off all the table grid lines. Then, put you...

Re: Page numbering keeps bouncing around

Also if you are on El Capitan, see this thread: viewtopic.php?f=22&t=6166. It's a FAQ mentioning a bug that causes pages to expand. Don't use Times New Roman if you can help it.

Re: Applescript Dictionary

Certainly. What I'm trying to do is build a more advanced templating system with conditional logic and repeat loops built into the document itself; for document automation. Think mail merge on steroids. Of the Mac word processors, only Word and Nisus really seem to have the advanced scripting to all...

Re: Invisibly Tagging Text

That's the thing: the RTF "Hidden" tag already exists in the RTF spec and has since, I don't know, the mid 90's? Long before the Cocoa RTF interpreter came along, that I know. So why doesn't that RTF interpreter, which Nisus uses, read it? Who knows? That said, if you actually examine the RTF codes ...

Applescript Dictionary

So I've been exploring the Nisus Applescript dictionary, and it's sadly quite lacking. It does not appear that you can access the entire document--only the text of the document. Which eliminates comments, footnotes, text boxes, etc. Is this correct? Oddly, selecting text in a text box, for instance,...

Re: Page numbering keeps bouncing around

My suspicion lies in one of two areas: a font that displays differently than it prints; and maybe a widow/orphan or keep together with next paragraph setting. Suggestion: put your table of contents into a different section, and restart the numbering in the text proper. That should eliminate the TOC ...

Re: Problem with Preferences Menu Keys panel

The reason why the preference file is so small is because of Sandboxing; the real preference file is in Nisus' sandboxing container. So the actual path is in ~/Library/Containers/com.Nisus.NisusWriter/Data/Library/Preferences/com.nisus.NisusWriter.plist Where the ~ at the beginning is your home fold...

Re: Invisibly Tagging Text

This is really a limitation of the Cocoa RTF engine; I've no idea why it doesn't implement the RTF tag that exists (and has for decades, no less!) for hidden text. Since hidden text is already part of the RTF spec, it would seem like a simple matter for Nisus to recognize the RTF tag; why they don't...

Re: Text Boxs?

This is unfortunate. I wonder if something can be done with raw RTF codes? Which leads me to wonder why NIsus hasn't implemented the hidden rtf code, or /v command. I know Cocoa's RTF interpreter doesn't read it, among others, but you can extend the attributed string class (I assume Nisus uses NSAtt...

Text Boxs?

So I read the macro language docs; searching for information on text boxes. It appears we can create a text box, and even position it (can we link it to a paragraph though?), but actually linking the text boxes together--is that possible? There appears to be very little available, and the menu comma...

Re: Endnote query

It's possible, though a bit wonky. Here's what you can do. Nisus Writer has the concept of a custom footnote/endnote reference. If you have the User guide (found under the help menu) check out pages 195 or so. The basic idea is that you will add an endnote to each of your chapter headings (I suggest...

Re: automatic new document

Try Preferences-> General. Under the "Application" section, there's a menu for "on application activation" which will allow you to select "Do Nothing" if you want.

I think that should handle what you want.

Re: Better interaction with Bookends

I for one would like to be able to reorder the index. As it currently stands, I think a reorderable index is about the only thing Word does that Nisus doesn't, at least in this area. I'm specifically thinking of Tables Of Authority here. Right now, I index all my cases (with each case being a subent...
