Re: Powerfind question

But I feel I'm getting too old to start learning the arcana of RegEx code! Regex codes are arcane indeed 🧙🏻‍♂️ They're amazingly powerful, but hard to keep straight unless you use them often enough– just like most skills. It never ceased to amaze me that a student could send me their CV/Resumé for ...

Re: Powerfind question

Adryan is right about the greediness of Regular Expressions, which is what PowerFind and Powerfind Pro use. However, a question mark in the wrong spot in the wrong spot can turn off greedy regular expression parsing That's exactly right. You can turn a greedy search into a lazy or non-greedy search...

Re: PDF anomaly with Chinese

Thanks for sharing the wisdom of your experiences Mark! You're right that this is a long-standing Apple bug that affects certain fonts and languages when generating PDF data. Trying to copy (or find) text in the PDF does not work properly because the underlying text was incorrectly encoded. It's a n...

Re: Bug? Nisus 3 seemingly randomly "Typesetting Text..." and sluggish, 50% CPU use, in long doc already open for hours

Frequently I have to add, say, 70 or so full page PDF graphics as sort of an appendix. When I do that, saving the document becomes long, not quite sure why. Like, 5 to 10 seconds long. I'm sorry for the autosaving delays. The problem is almost certainly the size of your images (in bytes on disk). T...

Re: Bug? Nisus 3 seemingly randomly "Typesetting Text..." and sluggish, 50% CPU use, in long doc already open for hours

1. Suppose I'm working in Long Document A. I then also open another one, Long Document B, check something in it, and then continue working in Long Document A. (I do this a lot). a) If I leave Document B open, is Nisus occupying itself trying to Typeset all of Document B, which will then interfere w...

Re: runaway Nisus File Converter

After communicating privately with Brad, it seems the problem was caused by the Nisus File Converter being incorrectly activated by the Finder. For whatever reason macOS tried to launch the converter when opening DOCX files in the Finder. That's undesirable because the converter is not a normal app....

Re: Large selections—like 20k words—showing no word, par., or char. counts (bug?)

It seems the number of countable words in a selection is a proportion of the total number of words in a file. In a file of 3,083,437 words I was able to have a selection with 1,694,545 words counted. The word limit will depend on a lot of factors, including the speed of your Mac, if your document h...

Re: Large selections—like 20k words—showing no word, par., or char. counts (bug?)

Got it! Works! Thanks Martin. Great! I'm glad to hear it :) An extra click is much easier than copy-pasting every time. My only regret, on behalf of myself and adryan, is that you weren't here yesterday. But we must put that down to limited processing time too I'll guess. :-) Haha, yes indeed! I'm ...

Re: Export to docx problem.

I'm sorry you're having trouble with DOCX export. I have a few questions for you:

1. Have you tried restarting your entire Mac? Sometimes that can clear out temporary problems.
2. Is there an error message on screen? If so, what does it say exactly?

Please let us know how you get along.

Re: runaway Nisus File Converter

I'm sorry for the trouble Brad. This seems to be a problem that's new to recent versions of Nisus Writer Pro. We're still investigating what we can do to solve it for a future software update. In the meantime please don't ever worry about killing the runaway converter process via force quit. That's ...

Re: Large selections—like 20k words—showing no word, par., or char. counts (bug?)

When I select large amounts of text, characteristically over 20,000 words, nothing shows in the Stats pallette, and the bottom of the page just says "1 Selection" instead of showing the number of words This occurs when Nisus Writer takes too long to count the number of words in the selection. We do...

Re: Bug? Nisus 3 seemingly randomly "Typesetting Text..." and sluggish, 50% CPU use, in long doc already open for hours

If I edit, say, in the first thousand words of a 400K document, does that mean that all the typesetting from that point onwards is being done over again, every time I make a change? That's more or less correct. If you make an edit somewhere in a document, all the downstream content must be re-types...

Re: Bug? Nisus 3 seemingly randomly "Typesetting Text..." and sluggish, 50% CPU use, in long doc already open for hours

There's one explanation for the behavior you observed. Is your large document set to Draft View, but the search results can only be displayed in Page View? For example, if the find matches are in the headers/footers. That will force Nisus Writer to paginate your document, to show you the matching te...

Thanks for the update Mark. It sounds like your Nisus Writer settings were being overwritten externally, which continually reset your floating palette configuration. You can pick a folder for those Nisus settings in your General preferences, under "synchronized settings location". That location can ...

Re: Permanently floating Styles Palette

What you described is unexpected Mark. If you have a floating palette visible when you quit Nisus Writer, it should be automatically restored when you later relaunch the app. I actually use that setup with the Formatting Examiner palette: it remains visible and floating at all times. I just tested w...
