Have you checked the console.log and system.log with Console utility when the linkback failures occur? The spinning pizza you reported indicates it's up to something, presumably trying to open/link to OG, so it should log an error (or stack trace, or something) when it fails.

SteveH, when you double click on the OG graphic in NWX is OG still active? I seem to recall someone else having a similar problem with LinkBack a while ago (can't find the thread now alas). As I recall they found that if they kept the app being linked to from NWX (e.g. OG) in memory it worked, but l...

I've had problems with repeatable crashes that can be replicated but am reluctant so send the document on to Nisus as the document is related to my PhD research. I guess other people have the same reluctance for similar reasons. This type of problem is very alarming so I guess I'll use Mellel until...

Auto Increment Lists

1. Select "Number List" from Tooldrawer or toolbar 2. Click "1.1" button in tooldrawer->Lists and verify "Number" is 1 and "Increment" is 1 and Format is "1,2,3". 3. In document window you should see "1." and the insertion point. Type your...

RTF files crash InDesign

Update: I still get InDesign crashes with new documents I create in NW, either as .rtf or .doc. I dumped the preference files in both programs after the crashing, but that didn't change things. :( Have you tried using an RTF file output from some other WP (e.g. Word, AbiWord, etc.) in InDesign? If ...

It looks like these log messages are not being generated by Express itself, but rather by "Fenris". What is Fenris exactly? 'Fenris' is the machine's hostname I believe (similar msgs, not from NWX, in my console log show the hostname there). Those messages do seem to be coming from/trigge...

Can you really write NWE macros in AppleScript rather than Perl? If so, I should look into that. Not "rather than" but "as well as". You can't use Applescript in place of Perl for NWX macros, but you can use Applescript to automate various NWX functions that you can't do in Perl...

Macros

Try reading the info on macros in the NWX User Guide. There is no automatic method of recording actions to create macros a la Applescript, Nisus Writer Classic, etc. with Nisus Writer Express, you have to code them yourself using Perl or Applescript. Thus you have to know something about either or b...

Simple Page Numbering

I hate to be contrarian about this, but you can also do it with AppleWorks (see "title page" in AW help)... and save it as a template for future use. There are many good reasons to prefer NWX over AppleWorks, but this is not really one of them. If he's as tetchy as you indicate forcing him...

I went through the Perl thing recently with NWX and I found it fairly straighforword. I read the User Guide ("Writing Perl Scripts" on page 193 onwards in particular but the whole macro section is valuable), played with some of the supplied scripts and had a look at their code. If you alre...

Happy Sigma Days

I posted on the Adobe User to User forum. Thomas Phinney of Adobe Systems responded and does say that the method Apple and Nisus is using is technically correct from a unicode point of view. However, they special case the Symbol font so that these problems don't arise. To conserve 20 years of mathe...

Status Bar Bug

I raised this with Nisus support and as usual they came back quickly with a response: "The change was made late in the development of the documentation (after most of the screen shots had been made). As you can imagine, when no *pages* display, it's hard to determine what page you're looking at...

Status Bar Bug

Draft view is draft view and page view is page view. That's as simple as that. Draft - no page numbers, page view - page numbers. Not according to the NWX 2.5 documentation where it says about the status bar: "The far left of the Statusbar indicates the current (displayed) page number o...
