Noting the date and author on each printed copy of a work, even if you haven't actually filed a copyright application, can give you protection until you actually publish a work.

Select a Word file, then Ctrl-Click for Get Info.
Select NWE for the "Open With"
Select the option to open all such files with NWE.
Then any Word file (.doc) that you double click will open in NWE.
