I was wondering if anyone could help me with a macro that will shade alternate rows in a table. I am just trying out Nisus Writer Pro and I am really impressed and the whole area of macros intrigues me, especially if they can be used instead of performing peretitive tasks.

I'm sorry to say that this isn't possible at the moment. Most of the table appearance properties are controlled only through the palettes, which do not have macro command equivalents.
