Bulleted lists

When using bulleted lists, there is a gray, shaded square around the bullet and right to where the text begins. I find this distracting. Is there a way to turn off the shading

Just go into Nisus preferences, appearance, automatic text, list items and change the color scheme from black/gray to black/white.
