Druide French Corrector

Post by Claude »

Hi to All

Any available reviews on Druide (actually, Antidote) French corrector. My questions are: does it fully integrate with NP ? Is it worth the money? Something better out there?

Thanks a zillion

Antidote RX is simply the best for French and it is fully integrated with NWP.
It is money well spent.

A major upgrade to Antidote RX is now available: Antidote HD.

I'm an ex-french teacher now turned school principal.

I have been using Antidote RX for over two years now with a variety of applications. Here are a few comments.

It's very good. As far as correcting spelling errors and « accords », it does a great job most of the time. But, it will not replace a good command of the language by yourself. You must be aware that it will make mistakes or miss some. Also, it happens regularly that it will suggests corrections that are not good. So keep an eye open.

That being said, it still is the best around. I have not tried Antidote HD so I will not comment on it.

As far as integration with other application, it varies. I use Pages, Nisus Writer Pro, Word and Textmate. In the three major ones, the integration is excellent. You select the text and right-click to access the contextual menu and select [Antidote - correcteur] to correct the selected text. You will go into the Antidote application and do the correction process. When done, you simply close the window and you are taken back to your wordprocessor. With Textmate, its almost the same, but there is an intermediate text window that act as a buffer for the text between Textmate and Antidote. No big deal, it works very well also.

I hope that helps. Any question, don't hesitate.

I've used, sometimes (and for several years) Ultralingua Grammatica. Both versions 6 and 7 were so slow to be unusable on a G5/Tiger, but version 7 seems to be speedier on an Intel/Leopard.

I wonder if I should invest the small amount of money required for the upgrade, or buy Antidote instead.

After spending a few hours with Antidote HD, I have to report that the program is very well made, and has a very effective user interface. The integration between the corrector, the dictionaries and the guides is what makes it different (and much more powerful) than a simple corrector. This one is a reference system for writers, more than a way of having a first guess on one's writing mistakes.

While testing Antidote, I could also note something else. I'm involved in a very complex translation, and I see that Antidote's dictionaries are no more advanced that the ones I have on paper. Great, standard dictionaries, but - again - not really complete for a specialistic translation.

Internet, for us translators, is really a great tool. Open dictionaries like Woxicon, and the various pieces of information one could find around the web, are a great addition to all classic reference books and CDs.
