TOC bug -- rebuilds as all paragraphs, Level 3, on opening

HI,

I had made a Level 1 & 2 Outline for navigation, and then noticed today that the Outline now shows every single paragraph in the document (about 500 of them) as a separate level 3 entry -- and everything is at the same level. My level 1 and 2 Outline has disappeared.

I tried various things, and finally deleted this new spurious TOC, and added a few chapters back to TOC Level 1 as a test. They appeared normally in the Navigator, and also a couple of Level two subsections. Appeared normally also.

But when I closed and opened the document, shazaam, the 500 paragraph level 3 list is back and my new TOC entries are gone again.

So, I looked back through the historic drafts, and this weird 500 line TOC appeared from one draft to the next a couple of weeks ago. I hadn't noticed it, hadn't used the Navigator recently. But I made many many small changes in all drafts-- moving things, new styles --, so I don't know what caused it (if anything I did caused it).

Any thoughts? I'm hoping it's a setting, but doesn't seem too likely. File corruption?

The most obvious idea would be that you are working with styles that are based on each other. So if the first style has an attribute to be included in TOC (level 1) and the other styles are based on that, then of course everything will be TOC level 1.
But the way you describe it with turning things off, and then suddenly reappearing sounds fishy. So if you can't get things to stick the way you want, I would recommend sending the file (or a sample) to Nisus.

Thanks for the input, got it, found it in the manual. Somehow I had added automatic indexing of level 3 to the Normal style.

The silver lining is that I now know how to automatically put a style into the TOC. :)
