Þorvarður's info concerning the "search across all open documents" macro is a revelation, which I intend to look into.
I'm also grateful for the feedback on tagging and databases, which I will follow up as soon as possible.
Like many such documents, my diary file has grown more or less haphazardly. I've used only one paragraph style to tag content: that identifies dreams, which can more or less be considered discrete blocks of text. But of course that quickly raises problems: if I jot down a dream using the "dream" paragraph style, should I use the same style when writing about how I interpret the said dream, or how it may relate to my waking life?
For other types of content I use simple character styles to create key words, such as "film", "health" and "travel".
This soon turns out to have at least two types of problem: the key words identify a portion of the text, but they don't delimit it. I've considered using a system of mark-up tags, as suggested by Þorvarður, but of course this raises issues of readability, as noted by adryan.
A further problem with tagging would be likely to arise when a certain chunk of text concerns more than one key word; I suspect it could become quite messy.
So far, I've refrained from using bookmarks and hyperlinks inside the document: tempting, but also a potential road towards incoherence, I fear.
It's possible that a database will be the way to go, in which case I will return to these proposals.
In reply to Xiamenese, I have tried Scrivener, but was put off by a simple non-technical factor: according to its web site, the program was basically written by, and is maintained by, a single person. This made me nervous about the product's durability.
In the short term, I've finally got round to following NisusUser's suggestions.
I've reinstalled NWP, but that hasn't made any difference.
So I've submitted the file to Nisus using the feedback mechanism. Will wait to hear from them.
