Is there a way to create a Master Document with linked Subdocuments in NWP? This would allow for consistent formatting and page numbering for very long documents. Can't seem to locate it in the User Guide.

Thanks.

Hi Rjones,

sounds like you have been using MS Word. :-)

Nisus doesn’t have this feature, but remember, there’s more than one way to skin a cat, and I have never missed this feature in NWP.

I don’t understand why this should be a problem in Nisus. Please be more specific. Where exactly does the problem emerge?

It would be much better, I think, if you could describe exactly what you want to achieve, instead of trying to imitate the behavior of MS Word.
Before I know exactly what the problem is, I would guess styles, section breaks, templates, the Document Manager, glossaries, and macros, especially the two “Join Files” and “SplitDocument”, will go a long way in assisting you keeping “consistent formatting and page numbering for very long documents”.

Uh, oh. You caught me in my lapse to MS Word. Like a dog to its vomit, I guess. 20 years of using it at work is hard to overcome.

I think your "Join Files" and "Styles" advice will prove to be helpful. Just need to play around with it bit. I am still something of a Nisus novice, so please be patient with me. In fact, I came to the Forum today to ask another question when I saw your comments.

So many questions, so little time.

Thanks for your reply.

While I agree that MS Word is a poor software, I still think that a master document is a nice feature. Let me give you an example. You work on a long document divided into Parts and Chapters, and each page has a header and footer. This document will have numbered issues and revisions. An issue and revision number are shown in each footer. The issue is not a problem you just change the complete document. The difficulty appears when you need to revise one page. The new revision number has to go into the footer on that page and footers on all other pages have to stay the same. It is possible to accomplish that through dividing the document into sections and giving each section its own footer.
Master document gives the person who manages such a complex document a freedom of producing a separate file for each chapter. It can of course be managed by hand, the snug is that table of content cannot be built automatically.
There are other software options, however, it is difficult to manage the document for print out as it has to be compiled before going to printing. The result becomes unpredictable when there are graphs and tables inside the document.
