"Jumping Photos"

I'm having issues with my photos jumping all over my document, not moving to where I drag them and then not staying put once I do get them in place. I really must be doing something wrong. I've tried Placement->Moves with Paragraph and Position on Page to no avail. The other odd thing is that the centering tool does not center the photo between my document margins, which I find odd. All of the images will have a caption. I have tried the Inline with Text option on one image and it seems to be behaving properly but the dialog that displays when I select this option is a bit ominous - captions may not be displayed by the image and it's a one-way street.

I am going to have over 100 photos and drawings in the book I'm working on so I'd like to get this sorted out asap before I go crazy! Any recommendations or suggestions greatly appreciated!

cheers,
Michael

Hello Michael– I'm sorry you're having trouble with photos jumping around on you. Please don't assume you're doing something wrong, you may be experiencing bugs or misbehaviors in Nisus Writer. Is it possible that you could share your document with me privately? If so, the menu Help > Send Feedback is a good way to do that. I'd like to try to reproduce and confirm the problem.

I believe you're talking about the warning that appears when you change a floating shape (one that wraps body text around it) so the shape is instead inline with your main body text. That conversion can indeed be a one-way street, depending on what exactly your floating content consists of.

The key thing to understand is that when you use the "Add Caption To Image" command, it automatically places your image in a floating text box. This isn't really clear from the command name, but that's why changing the wrap back to "inline" gives you a warning. The conversion will ungroup the text from the image, so they are no longer a single piece of content. Instead you just have an image followed by some caption text. That's not necessarily a problem, as the original image and text are still intact and editable, it just changes the nature of the content so they are no longer treated as a single unit.

So, all said, inline graphics might still be your best solution, if it fits your needs. Instead of using the caption menu command, just give your image a caption manually (eg: insert text after the image with appropriate formatting). Once I see one of your documents and what you're trying to achieve, I might be able to better help you with this goal.

Ok, document sent. It might be a little bit of a mess since I started deleting and re-adding photos. Bet see what you can.

Yes, the warning but for changing position of an image to inline with text option.

Ah, Now I see why my images with captions in view hidden mode look like multiple boxes.

I think a lot of the images will be best managed inline but I do have a few like the Yoda and my 3D printed fishing reel you'll see. I added the 1/2 opaque background on these as you suggested.

The way image anchors jump around was driving me nuts. If the anchor would stay put and the image stay where it's anchored, that would make more sense!

Most of the images so far are place holders until I complete the final artwork and/or photos. Images 2, 3 and 4 are ones that jump everywhere. I'm not sure why 4 is numbered before 2 & 3 but that's my fault - I must have reorganized the section and not renumbered yet.

Thanks, I'll be on the lookout for your document. I haven't received it yet, but our web host is having some performance problems with their email systems (which reports are routed through), so it might be delayed.

Right, that's because the image and caption are placed inside a floating text box. That floating text box has its own boundary.

A few floating graphics that really need to wrap text around them shouldn't be a problem.

You can actually turn this off if you like. Right-click any floating content (eg: floating image, shape, text box, etc) and uncheck the option "Adjust Anchor When Shape Repositioned". That setting is stored on a per-shape basis, so you'll have to turn it off for each shape you create. We should probably allow the user to choose a default for that somehow. I'll make a note of it.

Ah! Very glad to know about turning off "Adjust Anchor." That has been a royal pain!
