Endnote numbering style

Is there any way to change the style of endnote (or footnote) numbering? I can't seem to get the actual numbers to be anything other than superscript.

Oops. I should add not the numberings which appear in the body of the text, but the ones which appear at the end, listing the actual references.

In your Style Sheet, click Endnote. Click the entry to the right of Reference Style and change it to some other character style. If no existing character style suits your purpose, create one.

I have not worked with this myself, so I don't know from experience that this will do what you want. I just clicked around to see what I could find, but it looks like it should work.
