very slow with footnotes

NWE 2.7. seems to handle footnotes even slower than previous versions. I work on documents with a lot of footnotes (500 ad more) and it takes forever (minutes) to open a document, crashes are frequent when I work in the footnote section.
I own a license, but because of the slowness NWE is quite unusable for most of my writing. Do others experience the same problem or might there be something wrong with my settings/setup?
Will the handling of footnotes improve in the near future?
