input menu disappears

The langauge input menu has disappeared in Nisus. It is there in the finder, Mail, Word, and other applications, but when I open the Nisus application or a Nisus file (even one with text in Chinese!), there is no flag or any other icon in its place. This may be related to an upgrade to 10.4.9, but in any case, I would like to solve the problem!
