Spelling & Dictionaries

Hello everyone,

I'd like to know if anyone's experiencing similar problems to this.

Having switched over the default dictionaries to British English, the spellchecker no longer appears to 'learn' new words and add them to the user dictionary. I've tried various combinations of options (check as you type on/off, switching to US English on the fly and so on) but nothing seems to work. It's a shame as it invalidates my primary reason for getting NWE in the first place.

Another problem I've seen noted, is how much everything chugs with large files. Apparently this was to have been fixed with 1.1.2., but looking at how slow it runs with my latest book typescript, I dread to think how slow ver. 1.0 must've been !

cheers - hope you can help with the spelling. I'll stick it out with NWE - but will I need to go to the bitter end in the process?

Hello there,

Since May when I last posted, I've stopped using NWE as it was so buggy. I still like the program, but v2.0 is going to have to be mighty to get me off AW6 - yes I was that desperate!

As to your question re: dictionaries, I seem to remember the British English was tucked away in the installer - but you can access it through Format>Languages>Edit Languages if I remember correctly. By choosing UK English, you also alter the speller thesaurus.

Maybe....

cheers

thanks... i was just coming back to delete my post - as you were using a UK dictionary, it prompted me to persevere with my search and found where the language selection was hidden..

what were the bugs you had (if they are in the forum i will find them) i am using 1.1.2 and i am really happy so far - no crashes - fast and just what i needed.

AW6, is it really as good a text editor as nisus?

Were your crashes related to deleting selected text? That has been the apparent cause of the crashes I have experienced. There's another thread devoted to that topic: Is this a common problem: freezing?.

I have to say that the Nisus folks are working on that issue. Mark Hurvitz contacted me and had me send files in which the problem occurred. I hope they'll figure it out and fix it for 2.0 (or at least fix it) as it's the most serious problem in my experience.

Not freezing - my problems were due to the spellchecker. Regardless of what dictionary I selected, it wouldn't interface with NWE to update the open document with changes to the body copy. This, after multiple reinstalls, choosing the boggo US English dictionary and so on. In the end, I had to cut and paste documents, drop them into AW6, spellcheck them in that then cut and paste them back into NWE!!!!!!! lol

As to AW6, it's a surprisingly powerful tool and given it comes free with all new consumer macs, is well worth checking out. On OSX, it's not crashed once, has better ease of use imho. Consider the spellchecking. I personally have no use for spelling as you type - to me, it's just a gimmick. I'd rather do all editing at the end of a document, but that's just me.

The only bugbear with AW, is that the user dictionaries you create with your own words, have a finite size (about 2500 words) so once exceeded, you have to create new dictionaries and name them as applicable for differnet work types. But aprt from that, it's okay. Check out the user web board at apple.com and see the kind of support it gets from the community.

best

Oops! My mistake, Zim. I read too quickly and got postings confused. Ashley mentioned not experiencing crashes.

I haven't had to tinker with the dictionaries, so I won't be of much help to you on your main concern. Anyone better qualified than I have any thoughts?

well thankfully that has not happened to me, it all works as advertised, and i am looking forward to #2. BUT if it had bugged up as you had experienced, i would not be using the tool, i cannot bear things that needlessly eat up my time - we only have one life and i am not too keen on spending it working round problems in software.

thanks. and thanks to nisus too.
