Columns problem

Help! I am aware from other posts that there is a column bug, but I am not sure it is the one I am getting.
I usually write with the page (A4) in portrait mode, and what I want to do when finished is turn the page to landscape mode, create two columns and have a fairly wide gutter (about 3cm) so I can have two A5 sheets from each A4. There are two problems.
First, the difficulty of making two even columns. Unless I am missing something, if you alter the column gutter you have to fiddle around adjusting both columns to make them equal.
Second and much worse is that the column mode is unstable. In the latest attempt the left hand column had no text or sometimes just one line in the middle of the page. No way could I top this happening.
I emailed tech support but have had no answer. Can anyone help?
