AHHH!!!!! Lost Document

I have been working on a very long document. Since November I have made extensive changes in it. Last night I was doing some other task and decided to close the document. Surely I hit save, but even if I did not, it has been saved recently. I have routinely been saving it on my desktop. When I tried to open the document this morning, there is nothing but quotations marks! Is it gone forever? Is there anything I can do.

Make a copy of the document and try to open it with OpenOffice or NeoOffice. If you succeed, save it again as rtf and re-open it from within NWE again.

Is it NWE 2.7 or 3.0? Tiger or Leopard?
