Some notes on cross references

Post by ptram »

As an author of technical documents, one of the things that I miss the most in Nisus, is the ability of referencing to headings. Things like: "See 'Chapter Two' on page 30".

A bit late, but I discovered that a workaround might exist - by using the List Item type of reference, after having inserted headings as if they were list items.

Here is how to do: First, create a document structure using a list style. Then, apply Heading styles to the list items as required. You will have a numbered set of headings, with the right auto numbering and style. Something like this:

1. Chapter 1
1.1 Para 1
1.2 Para 2
...

When referencing, you will see your headings as list items. (Shame there isn't a reference style including both text and page number in the same reference, as in the example above).

Two problems arise with this workaround: (a) you cannot edit the heading text without breaking the reference, and (b) you cannot insert lists in the text, or you will break the heading numbering. I see issue (a) also as a general problem with any other kind of reference.

In the end, the addition of a "Heading" type of reference would be warmly welcome by me :-)

Seconded. I've already sent my feedback to Nisus. For the time being, I mark headings as bookmarks in order to be able to create cross-references to them. Not an ideal solution...
