Downloading: Mirror vs Archive options?

Post by NoMoreWindows4Me »

I want to upgrade from 3.0 to 3.1, but don't know whether to click on "Archive" or "Mirror".
What's the difference, and which should we use?

TIA

Both download options are exactly the same. The "archive" or "disk image" caption just describes the format of the file, eg: that it's a zip archive or disk image file. The caption "mirror" just means an exact duplicate copy of the file is hosted in another location. Perhaps using the captions "download" and "alternate download" would be clearer to the uninitiated.

How about just "Download"? "Alternate download" means no more to many of us than "mirror" or "archive" when we just want to upgrade NWE and don't care how "the computer" does it.

Nevertheless, thanks for clarifying. Now I can push a button and upgrade NWE without worrying about messing something up.

Apparently not. Now I have two duplicate NWEs in my dock. But with only one of them listed in Applications, I can't tell which is the updated version.

It's coming back to me now that when I upgraded to NWE 3.0, it took me days to sort out a whole pile of NWEs on my computer. Got any ideas how I sort this out, please?

This shouldn't be too tough to sort out. To be absolutely sure you've hooked everything up right:

1. Quit any copies of Nisus Writer that are running.
2. Remove all versions of Nisus Writer from your dock (eg: drag the icons out so they "poof").
3. Move the old copy of Nisus Writer from your Applications folder to the Trash.
4. Copy the new Nisus Writer to your Applications folder.
5. Place the new Nisus Writer into your dock (eg: drag the file icon from the Applications folder to the dock).
6. Click the Nisus Writer icon in your dock to launch it.

If you want to verify that you've correctly installed the latest version use the "About" menu item that appears in the application menu, eg: Nisus Writer Pro > About Nisus Writer Pro... You'll see the version number near the upper right corner of the about box.

All steps seem to have worked, except NWE is not in my Apps folder. The icon is in my dock, and launches and finds existing documents fine, but it does not appear in my Apps folder. I have found no way to drag or COPY it into Apps; it doesn't drag, and no COPY option appears any time I highlight or click or right-click on any NWE icon or listing. (if it matters, I'm on an Intel iMac running OS X 10.4).

You want to move the application you download from the web to your Applications folder, eg: in the Finder drag the downloaded application icon from your Desktop (or downloads folder) to the Applications folder. You can't drag the icon from the dock to the Applications folder because the dock icon is just an alias, eg: it isn't the real application, just a link to it.

Well -

if you didn't succeed to copy NWE to the Application folder, but still got it running from the Dock, I would guess: you started NWE from the Disk Image you downloaded. So Quit NWE first and Poof the NWE icon from the Dock.
The Disk image is listed as separate device in the left column of the Finder window, where your HD, etc is listed. Open the Disk image and Drag and Drop NWE to the Applications folder below. Copying will take some time. Get a new Dock icon from NWE in the Application volume. You now can start NWE from the Dock - and Unmount the downloaded Disk Image by clicking the Eject icon to the right of the Disk Image's name...

Enjoy

"Disk Image" is not an entry in the left Finder window.
In the Finder window, I dragged NWE into the Apps folder. This involved no COPYing delay, but now NWE 3.1 appears in the Apps folder.
NWE 3.1 seems to be working correctly. I can open and close it from the Dock icon, but can find no Disk Image reference floating around anywhere. NWE 3.0 is hiding in Trash, awaiting its ultimate fate when I'm sure 3.1 is installed correctly.

Am I home free -- thanks to you guys' help -- or skating on thin ice because there was no COPY delay?

From what you've described, I think you're all set. The upgrade you downloaded has no disk image involved, so there's no copy operation to worry about. (only the full non-upgrade download uses a disk image).

You can, however, Command-Shift-drag the application icon from the Dock to the Applications folder. This will move the original application from whenever it is to the Applications folder.
