Jeff,
What green background. I've never seen it.
Please send a screen shot (Command-Shift-4) to support@nisus.com.

Re: the green background
He must be using Nisus O'Writer Express. Very popular with leprechauns and melancholy poets.
That, or he's colorblind.

It *is* greenish. Well, dark bluish-greyish-greenish.
(The page has to be smaller than the window for you to see it.)

at this time you cannot change the background behind Page View. That is because we decided that the current blue color is the best color anyone could ever pick, so why would you ever want to change it? (I'm just kidding.)
Seriously, though, we will add this to our list if items to include. We are at feature freeze for 2.0 though, so it will probably come in a release after that one.
Cheers,

It *is* a good color. I did not even notice it.
By the way, something else for future consideration. Being able to change both text and background color in draft view, so you can fx be able to write white on blue or whatever.

regarding:
Choose Preferences from the Nisus Writer Express menu.
In the General Preference panel click the color box beside Draft Background Color and choose the color you want.
<smirk>We tried to make it harder, but had difficulty.</smirk> We're still considering the possibility of a Page View background color that would convert to HTML and be printed. We've not received a lot of demand for it, but, we just want you to know we're thinking of you and your potential needs/desires.

Yes, I have seen this, but what about the text color? Like I said, if I want to write white on blue or something.
(Not important I guess, but some people find it more soothing for the eyes. Especially if they have used WordPerfect.)
... Okay, I can change the text color to white in the Character palette, but then it won't print.

Foreground (text) and Background (Page/Draft View) Coloring
A little "behind the scenes" discussion brought back to the forum:
Eolake wrote regarding setting the background color in Draft View:
It seems (as we say here in the States) you want to have your cake and eat it too. You want the text color to be "virtual". It should appear white on blue (on screen), but actually still be black on white.
To which Eolake replied:

Yes, that's correct, white text on white paper won't print. So, before printing, switch to Page View (if you want), choose Select all from the Edit menu, Click the text color box in the Character palette and choose Black.Yes, I have seen this, but what about the text color? Like I said, if I want to write white on blue or something.

To which Eolake replied:
That's an interesting idea. The user interface would be a bit difficult. How do we know that a color you choose in the Character palette is for virtual and not print?Exactly.
Actually I almost added the "virtual display" term.
This feature was the one thing I liked when I once bought and tried Word Perfect for Mac.
I think it came from WP for DOS originally. Which had white text on blue. Nice for the eyes.
(WP for Mac was buggy otherwise. It did not highlight all the text it had selected, and I once deleted a whole chapter by mistake, which is why I stopped using it.)
These background/foreground displays predate the Macintosh's commitment to WYSIWYG word processing. Admittedly, Draft View is just that, a non-WYSIWYG view of your document. However, it is so only in the layout of the text, not its font/size/style (which includes color). When footnotes are implemented in version 2.0 we'll have a special way to view footnotes when in Draft View. What you request here raises a host of complications that we're looking into.Yeah, it would have to be clear.
But what you select in the palette is real. What you select in preferences is, and would be, Virtual. And the background color you select for Draft view is anyway.

Thanks, I hear you.
I don't know how many people would care. But this is such an issue that is about an app for WRITING as differentiated from Composing. The professional writer who knocks out thousands of words daily, likes to get the minimum of eye strain.

Have you considered letting the OS take the [eye] strain?eolake wrote:The professional writer who knocks out thousands of words daily, likes to get the minimum of eye strain.
If you investigate the System Preferences, and take a peek at the Universal pane, you will see all kinds of options intended for people with disabilities. There's a whacking great button there in the Seeing tab which turns your *whole* interface negative.
Would that achieve what you want? With a bit of colour adjustment, you could get a blue background (try an orange one in normal view) and white text (which is the inverse of black).
Hey! I might try this for the fun of it. I'd love to see the look on the faces of my printers when all my print work ends up inverted!

I don't know if it is a British thing, but I would just like to add that I too would find it good if (virtual) coloured backgrounds were available in page view.
There are times when page view seems preferable for writing (nice to have a bit of clear space around) but you don't want to have to stare at bright white for long periods. I can see no objection to adding this to general prefs, perhaps labelling the option in such a way as to make clear that it is not a formatting option.
(Not personally so bothered about text colour in this context.)

It sounds like a lot of this color concern -- so to speak -- could be addressed just by having a selection for foreground color in draft mode, too. That way when someone switches to draft mode, they'd be writing with white on blue or whatever they were happy with. The foreground color in draft mode can be just as "virtual" as the background color, and the draft mode would either simply lose the ability to display colored text the way page view can, or let colored text "override" the default color chosen in draft mode preferences.
