Another Spelling Problem?

Post by goldste4 »

Hello,

I have a document which is set to Canadian English, but it has a few words in German which are marked with a character style that sets the language to German. The language palette in the tool drawer correctly picks up which language and dictionary to use, and picks out the misspelled words in the appropriate language. So far, all is well and good.

However, when I run Edit:Spelling:Check Spelling the spelling window only shows the Canadian English dictionary, doesn't seem to recognize when a word has been marked as German, and therefore indicates a misspelled word, even as the Language Palette, at the very same time, is showing German and indicates no misspelling.

Is it my machine? NWP? OS X 10.6.3?

Thanks,
Josh Goldstein

Hi Josh- I set up a document as you've described, and didn't have any trouble with the check spelling panel switching back and forth between English and German. But perhaps I did something differently. Could you send me the offending document, preferably via the menu Help > Send Feedback? If that still doesn't reproduce the issue for me, I suppose we'll have to go over your language/spelling settings, both in NWP and OSX. Just to get that started, could you tell me if you've installed any special spelling tools/dictionaries that didn't come with OSX? Thanks!

Hi Martin,
The offending document is sent as requested. Re: languages: I haven't installed any dictionaries or languages other than what comes with OS X 10.6.3. Again, I appreciate the quick response and help.
Thanks,
Josh

Thanks for the file Josh. I've taken a look and everything works for me. As an example, I placed the selection at the front of the paragraph starting with "Two extremes". If I bring up the spelling panel, NWP skips all the words marked in your German character style and flags the English word "despotical". I take it that's not the behavior you're seeing.

What spelling dictionaries do you have set for both of the languages you're working in? You can look in the NWP Language preferences pane to see.

Hi Martin,
The German language is set to "Deutsch" for the spelling, and the English (Canada) language is set to "Canadian English" for spelling under NWP's Preferences - Language.
However, I just tried (and I should have done this before) typing some text in a new file in English and German (using the my German character style), and the spelling window works perfectly, switching to the appropriate dictionary as needed. So, I wonder if there is something about the file which is the problem? It's been imported from Wordperfect and converted to RTF through NWP. Also, when I copy some text (the paragraph that you also tried) to a new file (selecting "use pasted styles" when asked), the spell window also works as it should. Hope that gives you some ideas.
Thanks,
Josh

Hi Josh, thank you for the additional information. I am puzzled that the same text behaves differently once extracted to a new document, and can't explain that. Well, the mystery deepens..

I've made sure my tests matched the settings you described, and still I cannot reproduce the issue with the document you sent along. One final request: can you zip up and send me your NWP languages folder? It is located in your home folder at:

~/Library/Application Support/Nisus Writer Pro/Languages

It also wouldn't hurt for me to have a copy of your preferences, found at:

~/Library/Preferences/com.nisus.NisusWriter.plist

I hope collecting all that doesn't put you out; it's the best chance we have of diagnosing this problem. Thanks for all your help so far!

Hi Martin, Thanks for continuing to work on the problem. I've just sent both requested zip files using NWP's Send Feedback. Best, Josh
