mystery gray text background

Post by ncdobson »

I convert MS docs to rtf to view w/ Nisus, & I sometimes get text that show up w/ a gray background that I can't convert to white. I've tried turning off the gray background for automatic text in preferences, but no joy. Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Nick D.

Could it be background color?
If so, select the text with the gray background and remove it from the Format:Background Color menu.

If the background color is not an attribute of a defined style, you can remove it from the background color tag in the Statusbar (at the bottom right of the document window) by placing the cursor anywhere in the unwanted color and then from the background color tag in the Statusbar, apply "Select All" and then "Remove Color".

If the background color is an attribute of a defined style, you will have to remove the background color attribute from the Style sheet.

Thanks for the suggestions. I had already tried to remove the background color w/o any luck. I think that it must be a style issue, but I don't usually work w/ styles & have no clue how to solve the problem. The only style listed for the doc is Normal (web), but even if I change it to Normal the background color remains. If I remove all styles & attributes, the background color remains. I'm going to attach the offending part of the doc to see if that helps.

Thanks again,

Nick D.

The color appears to be in the RTF code which allows a bibliography software to work with it.
If styles do not matter, you can copy the whole text and paste it as Text Only. (From Edit:Paste:Paste Text Only menu).
But then the text will lose its link with the bibliography software.

Hi, Nick.

It appears it’s a field of some kind, I don’t know which. The shade doesn’t print, at least not when the document is exported to pdf. You can disable it. Go to Preferences > Appearance and select Marked Text from the list at the bottom, then click on Field Code and check Hide this Highlighting. That’ll do the trick.

Cheers, Henry.

Henry & Hamid have the correct answer- thanks for that guys. Putting it together:

They grey shading is used to mark that your text has a field code applied, specifically your text has the code "ADDIN RW.BIB" for your bibliography. As Henry mentioned, you can turn off the shading in your preferences. Or, as Hamid mentioned, if you don't mind losing the formatting and the link to your bibliography software, you could copy-paste it as plain text.
