space above and below heads

Post by artful1 »

Instead of a a simple return before and after a head or subhead (above and below), I would like to be able to specify the amount of space used in both instances.
Please, tell me how. NWP 3.0.1

G’day, Dismas et al

Assuming your heads and subheads constitute paragraphs, position the cursor anywhere within a paragraph and use the Spacing options in the Paragraph Palette to adjust Space Before and After as desired.

These settings could be incorporated into Styles. A Style for a head might have a certain font size, weight, case and spacing-after, while a Style for a subhead might have different values for these parameters (eg, smaller font size). These Styles could then be accessible from the Styles Palette.

Adrian, many thanks. Can I also program in a font change and alignment? Is there a keyboard shortcut for starting one of these (I call them macros).

You can do all sorts of things in the Style Sheet:–

View > Style Sheet

(or use the Style Sheet button in the View Toolbar Item in the document Toolbar).

You can use menu commands or Palette options to customize the sample text. So you can choose fonts, indentation, etc. You can create Styles for (say) Main Heading, Sub-heading and Standard Paragraph, and set the Next Style to the succeeding one in the chain.

You can assign Keyboard Shortcuts to your Styles:–

Nisus Writer Pro > Preferences > Menu Keys > Format > Paragraph Style > Sub-heading (say)

Note that these are not Macros. Macros are chunks of code that perform (a generally complex series of) actions. They, too, can be assigned Keyboard Shortcuts.

You can also assign keyboard shortcuts to styles directly in the style sheet.
