footnote and italics functions not working

I am using the latest version, but all of a sudden I am not able to use the footnote or italic functions in the tool bar. They are not highlighted when they should be.
Any ideas what could be the problem?

Please let us know if you can share the problematic document with us for testing, or if you're willing to use a special "debug" version of Nisus Writer to gather more information about this issue.
