If I type 2 consecutive lines, separated only by a Return, and then insert a same-page section break between them, I get unwanted space between the lines.

Position the cursor at the end of the first line and drag it to the beginning of the second line. This will select the Return at the end of the first line and cause it to be overwritten by the Section Break with its associated Return, thus leaving you with only a single Return there and no unwanted spacing.

If you have Show Invisibles turned on (towards the bottom of the View menu), you can see the Return associated with the Section Break and hence get an idea of what is going on.
