Two windows of the same document?

Post by Fred90s »

Hello,
Is it possible to open two windows (or more) of a document ? And have changes made in one of them automatically reported in the other one (since it's the same document). My purpose is to have a part of my document opened as a reference to amend other parts in the same document and vice versa.

I could of course use a duplicate, but a change made in a window would not happened in the other.

I haven't found a way to activate this feature yet.

Thank you.

Hello Fred,
You should be able to do this with Split View. Choose View > Split View > Vertical Orientation. Synchronize Scrolling (also in the View menu) gives you additional options. Press and hold the Command key to temporarily disable Synchronize Scrolling. This allows you to set up both windows exactly like you want and scroll them simultaneously.

You can add as many views as you like.

Thank you, Þorvarður.

I wanted two independent windows so I could shrink one (with a smaller "reference text") and save space on my screen. But your solution will be fine too. Apparently, this feature exists in MSWord.

Since you only need the smaller window for reference, try this: Edit > Clipboards > Edit Current Clipboard
This opens your current active clipboard in a separate window.
1. Shrink it and place it wherever you want on your screen.
2. Go to your main window and copy the text you need for reference. Your reference text appears immediately in the Clipboard window.
3. Edit the (reference) text in your main window and copy the new text.
4. All changes will be immediately reflected in the Clipboard window.

Multiple clipboards can be visible at the same time, and since each one can be quickly activated with a custom keyboard shortcut you can easily work with multiple small "reference texts" on the screen. I think there is also a macro available to rotate the clipboards, in case one needs to do that.

Thank you, I'll see if that works out for me. The clipboard window is what I was looking for, but I need to do things the other way: copy some parts of the reference text from the small window and paste them in various places in the "main window". But if the small window is a clipboard, every time I copy a part of the texte, that clipboard is no longer the full reference text and becomes the small part I copied. And my screen is not wide enough to spread small clipboards everywhere...

Your Split View solution will do better if not perfectly.

Thanks.
