It doesn't appear that NWP allows me to insert a box to put text in, nor to use shading for a paragraph (or inside the box). Have I missed something?

Tom, a single-cell table should do what you are trying to do.

Thanks. That works. And I even was able to paste a chart into the cell, not that I needed to do that.
