I have a template for pleading paper. It has numbers down the left side of the page and a vertical line. My problem is that I need the spacing of the numbers to stay the same (double-spaced) even when the text changes its spacing. When I change the spacing of the text the spacing of the numbers changes. Is there any way to keep the number spacing the same while changing the text spacing.

Like this:

1 Attorney's name
Address
2 Phone number

At this time the line numbers in the gutter are inextricably linked to the layout/spacing of the text in the main document.

However, there is a way to cheat- you can use a floating graphic that runs along the margin of the page. I've attached two such templates, one using Courier and the other Times New Roman. Let me know how they work for you.

It worked -- for one page. How can I replicate the graphic on every page? I know, hard to please.

I was under the impression that a pleading page only had the numbering appear for the first page? In any case, the graphic comes from the first paragraph of the document, eg: it is attached to the first newline. If you copy-paste that paragraph onto the second page the floating graphic should appear there as well. The paragraph can be empty, you just need that newline.

Any chance of this getting "fixed" in a future version of the product? The ability to have the line numbering "fixed" down the page, independent of what is actually on the page (single-spaced text, double-spaced text, tables) would be of great value to anyone doing legal work in Nisus.

One solution would be for Nisus to implement a "watermark" or "background" feature: a page that is superimposed on every page in the document.

Meanwhile, a possible workaround would be to save a Nisus document to PDF, then use Acrobat Pro (or another PDF utility such as PDF Pen or PDF Clerk) to superimpose a watermark or background on the PDF.

The watermark could work. So could more options on the line numbering palette (number every nth line [independent of how the spacing of the document is set], number entire page [even if it's not full]). I know about the workarounds. They're just a bit inconvenient… Thanks.

The best solution would be for NWP to have floating text boxes. Not only would they make pleading pages easy, but are a great feature in general.

But as an aside, I personally don't really understand the reasoning behind the pleading page requirements. Why require the line numbers to be independent of the lines of text? That seems less useful when you want to reference a line. Why not simply require that the first page have exactly 56 lines of text, every other one numbered?
