trouble with footnote section
trouble with footnote section
Hi, I think I have a trouble in writing footnotes. Probably after I updated to NWP 1.2, while writing footnotes, some kind of redrawing of the footnote section (or blinking in the section) seems to happen every 30 second, which makes the footnote section inactive and I have to click the section again before I continue typing (really irritating). I can't find the way to avoid this so far. If any suggestion for solving this troble, I greatly appreciate. Thanks.

Re: trouble with footnote section
That problem sounds unusual and is something that shouldn't be happening. Would you be able to send us the file using the menu Help > Send Feedback? Please include a description of what steps to take (and where exactly) to trigger the issue, thanks.
Re: trouble with footnote section
Dear Martin,
Thanks for the reply.
I am using NWP1.2 localised to Japanese, sold by Mercury software Japan. And I can't find "Help>Send Feedback" in the menu.
May I send the file attached to an e-mail (to which address)?

Sure, you can send it to us directly at:

Re: trouble with footnote section
I think I sent an error report through the "feedback". I hope you could find solutions, or, at least some hints.
As a matter of fact, I am still being annoyed with that trouble.
What has become clear is that this happenes when the file is longer than ten pages and has several notes in the same page.
I tried the NWP1.2 on the other Mac, but the result was same.
Best

Re: trouble with footnote section
Thanks for sending in your feedback. Sorry about the delay while we were investigating this issue. We were initially unable to reproduce the problem, but on a hunch we tried an experiment and believe we may have an idea as to what is causing your troubles.
Some background information: the set of active/available fonts is managed by OSX. Whenever the user adds/removes a font the system tells all applications that the set of available fonts has changed. In response, applications need to verify the font is not in use, update font menus, etc. Unfortunately we've had reports where we know that OSX sends these "available fonts changed" notifications in situations when the fonts have not actually changed. This can be a drain on application performance, especially as these spurious notifications seem to be sent as often as every 30 seconds.
That incidentally was the clue that helped us: you mentioned the footnote area became inactive about every 30 seconds. On a hunch, we placed the selection in NWP's footnote area, launched FontBook, and manually disabled some fonts. This triggered the "fonts changed" notification, which then causes NWP to do some housekeeping activities, and in the process incorrectly deactivates the footnote area. This is a bug in NWP that we'll look at fixing for a future NWP upgrade.
That said, it's still undesirable for your system to be sending these font changed notifications to all applications every 30 seconds. We don't know why it happens. It seems to be a quirk of Leopard (OSX 10.5), we've never had reports of it occurring under Tiger. You might try running some housekeeping applications that clear out system font caches and that kind of thing, to see if it helps.
Thanks again for your help.

Re: trouble with footnote section
Thanks for the detailed explanation.
As has been suggested, I tried to clear font cash using utility program such as FontNuke, but it didn't work.
Still after blinking for a while, footnote section becomes inactive.
I may have to wait for the next update...
Or, is it possible to go back to the previous version?
I think before updating I didn't have this kind of problem.

Re: trouble with footnote section
Thank you.
The previous version (NWP1.1) seems to be working fine in the meantime.
I can edit the footnote. For the time being, I will use this, waiting for next update.
