Can I create NWP-specific keyboard shortcuts for special characters manually (by double-click) inserted from Character Palette, such as ž or ā?

This is not currently possible to do directly, however, it is relatively simple to set up some macros for common characters. Here's how:

1. Create a new macro for the character you desire, it would look like: 2. Save the macro to your Macros folder (easy to do using the menu Macro > Save As Macro.
3. Go to the Menu Key preferences and assign the macro a shortcut.

One might accomplish this across all Cocoa applications (NWP included) by configuring your OSX Keyboard Bindings and/or keyboard layout, but I'm not an expert on that. You can read this page, but it's very complicated.

you can customize your German keyboard the way the U.S. keyboard is Extended -
I did my "German Extended" keyboard with "Ukelele" from SIL.org -

It is easily done and then you can write whatever special characters needed -
as easily as writing French with German keyboard...

I'm thinking about using Ukelele but I'd like to know one thing first: Is it possible with Ukelele to disable the CAPS LOCK key? It's quite annoying hitting it accidently while typing fast and finding later that you've typed several lines in capitals.

if I understand your question - my SIL "Ukelele" done "German Extended" keyboard is located at:

"User" / Library / Keyboard Layouts / German Extended.keylayout

but didn't work on "Caps Lock" myself - but "Ukelele" comes with "Tutorial" and "PDF-Manual" plus "Online Help". Give it a try - I started with duplicating "U.S. Extended" and added "German" specials to get my "German Extended" running...
