The end notes (some eighty of them) have disappeared from my document. I had highlighted them to change the font size and must have inadvertently hit a key or some such. With Cmd-Z, I could get them back, but I could not do anything with them. When I hit a key, I would merely get a "boop." Foolishly, I thought if I saved the doc, and then closed and reopened it I could get back to normal. (This has worked for other probs in the past) Instead, I now have the text with no notes at. Is there ANY way of recovering them?

I'm sorry to say that the situation sounds bleak. If the file reopens without any notes, it was probably saved at a point after the notes had been deleted and thus were not included in the file. To be completely sure, you could send us the document (via the menu Help > Send Feedback) and we can check if there's any trace of them in the file, but I doubt it.

Your best hope would be a backup you've kept (or a Time Machine restoration).

Thank you very much. Fortunately my computer had automatically backed up that file to my iDisk a couple of hours previously. I subsequently was able to recover almost everything using Backup. But, I'm still not certain how I lost the notes in the first place. I inadvertently hit something and would sure like to know what it was.

Can I humbly submit a suggestion to the OP?

If ever anything like that happens, in any software, do not Save the document. That is asking for trouble and losing all your work ... always do a "Save As" to another location and preferably under another name. That way, your original will be safe and not over-written by the faulty version.
