Many times I find this menu (Insert>New Style>Based on Selection) a bit limiting. All’s very well when I need to create a new paragraph style, but when it comes to creating character styles the menu falls short. Feels like it just recognizes plain attributes, like bold and italics. Often I need to create a new character style for, e.g., greek words in a roman context. Generally I select the text and set a different font with greek capability, like Lucida Grande or an OpenType that has a greek alphabet. To make a long story short, in this case, when I go to New Style>Based on Selection the menu invariably allows me to create a new paragraph style and that’s that.
I think there should be a split option, like Insert>New Style Based on Selection>Paragraph Style OR Character Style. This would be more useful.

Thanks Henry, that's a great idea. The menu command is currently confusing and we should allow for the user to explicitly choose which kind of style to create.

But about failing to recognize attributes aside from bold/italic, I'm not sure I understand. Can you give me an example of an attribute that the menu fails to detect and add to your new style?

Thanks, Martin. A different size, a baseline attribute (super- sub-script), a different font. In all these cases, NWP defaults to create a new paragraph style whereas I would like to create a new character style.

Ah, I understand.. it's the choosing of Character vs Paragraph that's wrong, not the actual attributes that are picked up. Thanks for the additional explanation Henry.
